2 September
Jenni and Andrew, you will head out early to beat the heat and the crowds, beginning your morning at one of the ancient world's most extraordinary sites, the Acropolis.
Raised on myths and philosophy, the ancient Greeks were always enthralled by female deities. The Goddess Athena loomed especially large in people’s minds, believed to have won a contest against Poseidon for the patronage of the city, by bestowing upon its people the perfect offering: an olive tree. The fruit provided sustenance, the oil fuelled lamps to banish the darkness and the precious wood was used to build houses and ships to conquer the sea. It’s no wonder the Parthenon, Greece’s most emblematic monument, was largely a testament to the power she held over the ancient world. In reality, no one really knows what came first: the city of Athens or the myth of the Goddess herself.
Today you will ascend the sacred hill to discover architectural marvels like the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, and the Erechtheion, famous for its graceful Caryatids. Led by your personal guide, immerse yourself in the myths, history, and grandeur of ancient Athens, gaining deep insights into its rich heritage - before rounding out the morning with a two-hour guided tour of the Acropolis Museum.
Jenni this afternoon your private guide will unveil Athens’ Art and Cultural treasures to you. The National Art Gallery of Athens, located near Syntagma Square and the Kallimarmaro Stadium will be your starting point. Home to over 20,000 artworks, it stands as Greece’s foremost art museum, offering an unparalleled journey through Greek artistic history. Conclude your cultural adventure at the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. Set in a stunning neoclassical building near the National Garden, this museum presents an extraordinary collection of Greek heritage, spanning from prehistoric times to the 20th century. Formerly the residence of Antonis Benakis, its exhibitions reflect the generosity and vision of the Benakis family.
